The Great Fire of 1895 and the Story of Wauwatosa’s Recovery
2024 Speaker Series
May 15, 2024 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm
Join us for the second Speaker Series event of 2024 where Carol Rosen, research and writing team member at the Wauwatosa Historical Society, will present the history of the Great Fire of 1895 and the subsequent effect it had on the community.
Did you know a devastating fire tore through Wauwatosa on a scorching July morning in 1895? By the time the flames were extinguished that evening, much of the village’s business district was reduced to ashes.
Was it arson or an accident? How did Emerson Hoyt, the Village President, become Wauwatosa’s first Mayor? How and why were Wauwatosa’s Waterworks and Fire Department established so quickly? What buildings survived the fire, and where are they today?
To learn more about the Great Fire of 1895, register for the speaker series event. Though Speaker Series event registration is free to members, registration is still required.
Please note that this event will take place at the Firefly Room at the Wauwatosa Public Library.
