DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fascinating journey through time as they explore the stories behind two of Wauwatosa’s historic burial grounds: Wauwatosa Cemetery and Oak Hill Cemetery. Learn how these cemeteries came to be\, who is buried there\, and what their lives reveal about the people and events that shaped our community. From early settlers to notable residents\, this talk uncovers the rich local history preserved in these sacred spaces. \n\n\n\nPresented by Jeff and Diane Roznowski\, who have been very active and involved residents of Wauwatosa for over 40 years. Jeff is a local historian\, former Alderman\, former WHS Board President and conducted extensive research on Oak Hill Cemetery for a podcast on Radio Milwaukee last year. Diane is a Master Gardener who leads a team that maintains the gardens at Wauwatosa Cemetery. She also coordinates the WHS 19th Century Schoolhouse program\, including serving as a teacher. SUMMARY:Guided Walking Tour of Wauwatosa Cemetery: Step into History
DESCRIPTION:Step into Wauwatosa’s past with a guided walking tour of the historic Wauwatosa Cemetery\, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2023. This special place tells the story of the people who shaped our community\, from early settlers to civic leaders whose names still appear on our streets\, parks\, and buildings today. \n\n\n\nThroughout the tour\, you’ll visit the final resting places of prominent families such as Clapp\, Fisher\, Gilbert\, Hart\, Harwood\, Hoyt\, Underwood\, Warren\, and Wheeler. You’ll also explore unique sections of the cemetery\, including those established by the Lutheran Kinderheim Society for children and the Lutheran Altenheim for adults\, offering a deeper look into the social history of the area. The cemetery is also home to veterans dating back to the Revolutionary War. \n\n\n\nTours are led by trained volunteers and offer a thoughtful\, engaging way to connect with local history. \n\n\n\nA few important things to keep in mind: \n\n\n\n\nWe’ll be walking through the cemetery\, which can be hilly and uneven\, so please wear comfortable\, sturdy footwear.\n\n\n\nThere are no public restrooms or water available on-site\, so plan accordingly.\n\n\n\nTours take place rain or shine\, so come prepared.\n\n\n\n\nMeet us at the Cemetery Chapel 10-15 minutes prior to the start time. \n\n\n\nPlease note: This tour is part of the Wauwatosa Historical Society’s ongoing partnerships with organizations across the city to preserve and share our local history. Proceeds from the tour\, minus administrative fees\, are forwarded directly to the Wauwatosa Cemetery to support the ongoing maintenance of the grounds\, roads\, and overall upkeep of this important historic space. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReserve your seat!
