SUMMARY:Horses and Hops:  The History of the Pabst Wauwatosa Stock Farm with John Eastberg
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we welcome John Eastberg for his presentation on the history of the Pabst Wauwatosa Stock Farm. \n\n\n\n\n\nBeginning in the early 1870s\, Milwaukee beer baron Captain Frederick Pabst began acquiring property in nearby Wauwatosa.  The Pabst Wauwatosa Stock Farm was not only a retreat for his prized Percheron horses that drew Pabst beer wagons throughout the city\, but also as a retreat for the Pabst family.  Eastberg delves into the history of the Pabst family\, their love of horses and how that transmitted into the early development of Wauwatosa and later the Washington Highlands. \n\n\n\nJohn C. Eastberg\, long-associated with the Pabst Mansion\, is currently a freelance historian\, continuing his research and writing on Milwaukee social and architectural topics.  He has written two books\, Pabst Mansion: An Illustrated History and Pabst Farms: History of a Model Farm as well as co-authoring Layton’s Legacy: A Historic American Art Collection\, 1888-2013 and is currently completing a three-generational biography of one branch of the Pabst family. \n\n\n\nRegister to secure your spot. Cost: FREE \n\n\n\n\n\nHops pickers on the Pabst Farm in what is now the Washington Highlands. SUMMARY:Gilbert Girls: Three Generations of Remarkable Wauwatosa Women
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we celebrate Women’s History Month!\n\n\n\n\n\n“Gilbert Girls: Three Generations of Remarkable Wauwatosa Women” is the story of Nancy Green Gilbert\, Mary Fisher Gilbert\, and Kate Evelyn Gilbert – all west side Wauwatosa residents. Nancy\, the mother of ten children\, was a true pioneer – one of the first to settle in Wauwatosa Township. Nancy’s daughter-in-law\, Mary\, came of age during Wauwatosa’s heyday – witnessing the changes as our small settlement became a village\, a city\, and finally\, a bedroom suburb of Milwaukee. Last but certainly not least\, Mary’s youngest daughter\, spunky Kate Evelyn\, resisted the wrecking ball when her childhood home was removed to make way for the new Mayfair Mall. Meet these three marvelous Gilbert Girls at our Speaker Series on March 10th at the Wauwatosa Public Library’s Firefly Room. \n\n\n\nPresenter Carol Rosen is a member of WHS’s research and writing team. She received a Ph.D. in Historical Geography from UW-Milwaukee and is now retired as Professor Emeritus from the Geography Department at UW-Whitewater. Carol and her husband\, Dave\, live in Wauwatosa. They have two grown children\, five grandchildren\, and an 11-year-old rescue “pup” who keeps them very busy. \n\n\n\nRegister to secure your spot. Cost: FREE \n\n\n\n\n\nSome of the many Gilbert Girls of Wauwatosa are shown picnicking on the shore of Lake Michigan.  All of the above are granddaughters or great-granddaughters of Wauwatosa pioneers Richard and Nancy Green Gilbert.
