SUMMARY:The Lost Book of Wauwatosa
DESCRIPTION:Ed Wilkommen’s Rediscovered History\n\n\n\n\n\nFor decades\, Wauwatosa’s most ambitious history existed only as a lost manuscript. Created by local historian Ed Wilkommen and packed with maps\, notes\, and years of research\, it seemed to have vanished. This illustrated talk traces how his forgotten work was rediscovered\, pieced together\, and finally published as a new history of Wauwatosa. \n\n\n\nPresented by WHS Volunteer Carol Rosen. Carol volunteers at the Wauwatosa Historical Society as a research and writing team member. She received a Ph.D. in Historical Geography from UW-Milwaukee and retired Professor Emerita from the Geography Department at UW-Whitewater. Carol and her husband\, Dave\, live in Wauwatosa. They have two grown children and five grandchildren. And… a 12-year-old rescue “pup” that keeps them busy! \n\n\n\nDoors open at 5:30 p.m.\, program starts at 6:00 p.m. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReserve your seat!\n\n\n\nThe Speakers Series is free to attend\, but please let us know you’re coming so we can save you a seat. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThank you to our sponsor\n\n\n\nThe 2026 Speaker Series is made possible through the generous support of our sponsor Champine Realty Group of Keller Williams.

SUMMARY:Wauwatosa's Polar Bears
DESCRIPTION:A Military Mission in Arctic Russia\, 1918-1919\n\n\n\n\n\nIn late 1918\, five Wauwatosa men joined American troops heading to North Russia’s remote reaches. Their mission: guard Allied supplies and stop communist revolutionary advances during the Great War’s final months. These soldiers fought in deep snow near Archangel. They battled disease. They survived a brutal Arctic winter. History remembers this as the Polar Bear Expedition. \n\n\n\nIndependent researcher Marguerite Helmers presents this program. Marguerite Helmers is an independent researcher with over thirty years of experience teaching at the university level. She is the author of numerous academic publications and has shared her research through talks and lectures locally\, nationally\, and internationally. Her favorite subjects are the literature and visual arts of early 20th century England and Ireland\, but she often drifts across the pond into 19th century America. Marguerite enjoys bringing complex historical topics to life in ways that are accessible to non-specialist audiences. In 2025\, she was delighted to join the research team at Wauwatosa Historical Society.

SUMMARY:Annual Meeting + Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Westward to Wauwatosa: The Underwood Family Journey\n\n\n\nJoin us for the Wauwatosa Historical Society’s Annual Meeting\, where we will reflect on the past year\, share plans for the year ahead\, and introduce nominees for the 2027 open board positions. \n\n\n\nFollowing the business meeting\, enjoy the final Speaker Series program of 2026 – Westerward to Wauwatosa: The Underwood Family Journey. \n\n\n\nIn 1836\, William Underwood and his family settled in Wauwatosa. The trip from their first home in Virginia took them through Illinois\, where William served in the Black Hawk War of 1832. Decades later\, his son Reverend Enoch Underwood recalled the family’s journey in a handwritten diary\, a photocopy of which is now preserved in the archives of the Wauwatosa Historical Society. This talk uncovers some of the Underwood family’s early history. \n\n\n\nPresented by Marguerite Helmers.
