SUMMARY:Exploring the Clapp Database
DESCRIPTION:Early Settlers\, Eastern Perspectives and Western Realities\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat did everyday life really look like in early Wauwatosa? What concerned the newest residents\, what brought them joy\, and how did they navigate the gap between their expectations of the west compared to the realities of the new frontier?  \n\n\n\nYou’re invited to dive into the Clapp Letters – personal correspondence that reveals how early settlers really lived\, what they valued\, and how they navigated life in Wauwatosa. Learn how primary sources like these letters help us move beyond textbook narratives to uncover the authentic voices of those who shaped our community\, and those who continue to shape it. From earlier settlers and beyond\, the Clapp Letters help us to answer questions about our community in a way that is both appropriate and personal.  \n\n\n\nPresented by WHS Researcher Rowen Mullins. Rowen is an aspiring history professor with a deep knowledge of public history and the value of the archives to the community. While they hope to eventually study Medieval history with an emphasis on Women’s work\, they are just as eager to learn about the local history and deepen the accessibility our community has to primary sources. For the past 7 months\, Rowen has been working on a large indexing project for the Wauwatosa Historical Society – The Clapp Letters – which will help to accomplish these goals. Having read hundreds of letters\, and with hundreds still being indexed\, Rowen is eager to share important things they’ve found between the lines and explore what that means about our community.  \n\n\n\nDoors open 30 minutes prior to the start of the presentation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReserve your seat!\n\n\n\nThe Speakers Series is free to attend\, but please let us know you’re coming so we can save you a seat. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThank you to our sponsor\n\n\n\nThe 2026 Speaker Series is made possible through the generous support of our sponsor Champine Realty Group of Keller Williams.

SUMMARY:Experience History: The History of Brewing in Wauwatosa
DESCRIPTION:Wisconsin’s brewing tradition stretches back to the 1830s — and Wauwatosa had a story all its own. Join homebrewer and beer historian Jeff Enders for an evening exploring the rise and fall of local breweries\, the characters behind them\, and the ways brewing shaped everyday life in our growing community. Each ticket includes one beer or beverage to enjoy during the talk\, making this equal parts history lesson and great night out. \n\n\n\nWhat better place to talk brewing history than a taproom born from the same spirit that built Wauwatosa’s earliest breweries? Lion’s Tail Brewing Co. opened its doors in November 2015\, the realization of a dream that began in Alex and Kristin Wenzel’s basement\, where Alex’s passion for craft beer had long since outgrown the available space. Today\, the Wauwatosa Tap Room is a warm\, welcoming gathering place for the community\, and we are so excited to bring this program to Lion’s Tail for an evening like this. \n\n\n\nThis event is part of our ongoing commitment to bringing history programming out of the archive and into the community. We’re thrilled to partner with a local business that shares our love for Wauwatosa’s story. We hope you’ll join us. \n\n\n\nPresenter Jeff Enders is a homebrewer with over 30 years of brewing experience\, brewing both modern and ancient beer styles. A student of all things pertaining to beer\, he is a certified beer judge and volunteers at Old World Wisconsin as a historic brewer\, demonstrating brewing over a wood fire\, 1860s style. \n\n\n\nDoors open at 6:15 p.m.\, program starts at 7:00 p.m. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReserve your seat!\n\n\n\nExperience history is part of our hands-on learning program series. Cost to attend is $20.00\, $15.00 for members.

SUMMARY:Theater in the Gardens - The City of Benedict della Crosse
DESCRIPTION:The Kneeland-Walker House & Grounds and Brigata Theater present the second summer season of Theater in the Gardens. This summer\, Theater in the Gardens presents encore performances of The City of Benedict della Crosse\, a play about an idealistic candidate for Wisconsin State Senate whose campaign for public office leads him into a battle between power and ideals.  \n\n\n\nThe Oscar-nominated screenwriter and Obie-winning playwright José Rivera calls The City of Benedict della Crosse a play about “a pivotal moment in our nation’s history when we\, as a democracy\, took a very dark turn in our discourse and in the way politics are conducted. It’s a disturbing origin story. Though a period piece\, The City of Benedict della Crosse is filled with lessons for our own time\, as the seeds sown in the past flower into truly grotesque forms today.” The play asks “the sorrowful question: how on earth did we get here?”The play will be staged under a large tent on the Kneeland-Walker Grounds. Chairs will be available to guests\, but guests are also encouraged to bring their own chairs and blankets. Guests are also encouraged to bring picnics and beverages to enjoy before\, during\, and after the performances. \n\n\n\nThis is a Wauwatosa Historical Society fundraiser\, with 100% of the profit to benefit the WHS! \n\n\n\nTickets are $25. If purchased before July 1\, tickets are $20. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nPurchase your tickets!

SUMMARY:The Lost Book of Wauwatosa
DESCRIPTION:Ed Wilkommen’s Rediscovered History\n\n\n\n\n\nFor decades\, Wauwatosa’s most ambitious history existed only as a lost manuscript. Created by local historian Ed Wilkommen and packed with maps\, notes\, and years of research\, it seemed to have vanished. This illustrated talk traces how his forgotten work was rediscovered\, pieced together\, and finally published as a new history of Wauwatosa. \n\n\n\nPresented by WHS Volunteer Carol Rosen. Carol volunteers at the Wauwatosa Historical Society as a research and writing team member. She received a Ph.D. in Historical Geography from UW-Milwaukee and retired Professor Emerita from the Geography Department at UW-Whitewater. Carol and her husband\, Dave\, live in Wauwatosa. They have two grown children and five grandchildren. And… a 12-year-old rescue “pup” that keeps them busy! \n\n\n\nDoors open at 5:30 p.m.\, program starts at 6:00 p.m.

SUMMARY:Wauwatosa's Polar Bears
DESCRIPTION:A Military Mission in Arctic Russia\, 1918-1919\n\n\n\n\n\nIn late 1918\, five Wauwatosa men joined American troops heading to North Russia’s remote reaches. Their mission: guard Allied supplies and stop communist revolutionary advances during the Great War’s final months. These soldiers fought in deep snow near Archangel. They battled disease. They survived a brutal Arctic winter. History remembers this as the Polar Bear Expedition. \n\n\n\nIndependent researcher Marguerite Helmers presents this program. Marguerite Helmers is an independent researcher with over thirty years of experience teaching at the university level. She is the author of numerous academic publications and has shared her research through talks and lectures locally\, nationally\, and internationally. Her favorite subjects are the literature and visual arts of early 20th century England and Ireland\, but she often drifts across the pond into 19th century America. Marguerite enjoys bringing complex historical topics to life in ways that are accessible to non-specialist audiences. In 2025\, she was delighted to join the research team at Wauwatosa Historical Society. \n\n\n\nDoors open at 5:30 p.m.\, program starts at 6:00 p.m.
