SUMMARY:Experience History: The History of Brewing in Wauwatosa
DESCRIPTION:Wisconsin’s brewing tradition stretches back to the 1830s — and Wauwatosa had a story all its own. Join homebrewer and beer historian Jeff Enders for an evening exploring the rise and fall of local breweries\, the characters behind them\, and the ways brewing shaped everyday life in our growing community. Each ticket includes one beer or beverage to enjoy during the talk\, making this equal parts history lesson and great night out. \n\n\n\nWhat better place to talk brewing history than a taproom born from the same spirit that built Wauwatosa’s earliest breweries? Lion’s Tail Brewing Co. opened its doors in November 2015\, the realization of a dream that began in Alex and Kristin Wenzel’s basement\, where Alex’s passion for craft beer had long since outgrown the available space. Today\, the Wauwatosa Tap Room is a warm\, welcoming gathering place for the community\, and we are so excited to bring this program to Lion’s Tail for an evening like this. \n\n\n\nThis event is part of our ongoing commitment to bringing history programming out of the archive and into the community. We’re thrilled to partner with a local business that shares our love for Wauwatosa’s story. We hope you’ll join us. \n\n\n\nPresenter Jeff Enders is a homebrewer with over 30 years of brewing experience\, brewing both modern and ancient beer styles. A student of all things pertaining to beer\, he is a certified beer judge and volunteers at Old World Wisconsin as a historic brewer\, demonstrating brewing over a wood fire\, 1860s style. \n\n\n\nDoors open at 6:15 p.m.\, program starts at 7:00 p.m. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReserve your seat!\n\n\n\nExperience history is part of our hands-on learning program series. Cost to attend is $20.00\, $15.00 for members.

SUMMARY:Exploring the Clapp Database
DESCRIPTION:Early Settlers\, Eastern Perspectives and Western Realities\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat did everyday life really look like in early Wauwatosa? What concerned the newest residents\, what brought them joy\, and how did they navigate the gap between their expectations of the west compared to the realities of the new frontier?  \n\n\n\nYou’re invited to dive into the Clapp Letters – personal correspondence that reveals how early settlers really lived\, what they valued\, and how they navigated life in Wauwatosa. Learn how primary sources like these letters help us move beyond textbook narratives to uncover the authentic voices of those who shaped our community\, and those who continue to shape it. From earlier settlers and beyond\, the Clapp Letters help us to answer questions about our community in a way that is both appropriate and personal.  \n\n\n\nPresented by WHS Researcher Rowen Mullins. Rowen is an aspiring history professor with a deep knowledge of public history and the value of the archives to the community. While they hope to eventually study Medieval history with an emphasis on Women’s work\, they are just as eager to learn about the local history and deepen the accessibility our community has to primary sources. For the past 7 months\, Rowen has been working on a large indexing project for the Wauwatosa Historical Society – The Clapp Letters – which will help to accomplish these goals. Having read hundreds of letters\, and with hundreds still being indexed\, Rowen is eager to share important things they’ve found between the lines and explore what that means about our community.  \n\n\n\nDoors open 30 minutes prior to the start of the presentation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReserve your seat!\n\n\n\nThe Speakers Series is free to attend\, but please let us know you’re coming so we can save you a seat. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThank you to our sponsor\n\n\n\nThe 2026 Speaker Series is made possible through the generous support of our sponsor Champine Realty Group of Keller Williams.

SUMMARY:Wandering Wauwatosa: 2025 Tour of Homes
DESCRIPTION:Explore five remarkable properties that showcase different eras and architectural styles in Wauwatosa’s history. Each location offers unique insights into the varied purposes these historic buildings have served throughout our community’s development. This tour is crafted for adult guests\, with complimentary admission for infants under 1 year. Please note that the nature of our tour makes it inaccessible to strollers or wagons\, so infants will need to be worn or carried. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTour Properties\n\n\n\nCaptain Henry and Catherine Leisk House\, 2114 Wauwatosa Avenue \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDiscover the elegance of Queen Anne Eastlake architecture in this 1888 masterpiece. Built for Great Lakes mariner Captain Henry Leisk and his wife Catherine\, this ornately detailed home showcases the fine craftsmanship of the late 19th century. The house later became home to the Warren family\, whose ancestors were among Wauwatosa’s earliest settlers. \n\n\n\n\n\nFormer Home for Dependent Children\, 9480 Watertown Plank Road \n\n\n\n\n\nTour the 1898 Administration Building that once served Milwaukee County’s most vulnerable children. This Colonial Revival structure\, now housing Milwaukee County Parks headquarters\, stands as the sole survivor of the original four-building campus that provided temporary residence for over 500 children during the Depression era. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEschweiler Manor\, 9841 Eschweiler Drive* \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nExperience the stunning transformation of this 1912 Engineering Building into a remarkable 7\,000-square-foot home. Saved from demolition and meticulously restored\, this former Milwaukee County School of Agriculture building now blends historic character with modern luxury\, featuring original maple floors\, salvaged dormitory brick fireplaces\, and restored windows. \n\n\n\n*Please see note below on parking at this tour stop \n\n\n\n\n\nWauwatosa East High School Lobby\, 7500 Milwaukee Avenue \n\n\n\n\n\nView the newly rediscovered Art Deco murals by Federal Arts Project artist Myron Nutting\, hidden behind plaster for decades before their restoration in 2004. The lobby also showcases exceptional handmade tiles from the Continental Faience & Tile Company\, with historian Ben Tyjeski sharing their remarkable story. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKneeland-Walker Home\, Carriage House & Cider Shed\, 7406 Hillcrest Drive \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nExplore the behind the scenes areas of this 1889-1890 mansion and the estate’s historic outbuildings. The two-story carriage house preserves four intact horse stalls alongside modern adaptations\, while the modest cider shed recalls the agricultural rhythms that once defined this area. Don’t miss the 1889 Gordon-style printing press in the home’s basement that helped tell Wauwatosa’s earliest stories. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Tour\n\n\n\nThe Tour of Homes is one of three flagship fundraising events held by the Wauwatosa Historical Society each year. This year marks the 36th tour that the Wauwatosa Historical Society has hosted this beloved event! \n\n\n\nThis year the tour\, entitled “Wandering Wauwatosa”\, will be held on October 4th\, 2025 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The tour will feature three historic homes and two historic buildings throughout Wauwatosa. \n\n\n\nHomeowners and building caretakers who have so generously agreed to share their properties will open their doors to the public and to docents that will share the histories and stories of the past. \n\n\n\nAll proceeds from the Tour of Homes directly and immediately benefit the Wauwatosa Historical Society\, enabling us to carry out our mission of collecting\, preserving and sharing the history of our great city! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTicket Purchase\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets: $35 general admission | $30 for WHS members (discount code sent via email) \n\n\n\nDay-of ticket purchases can be made at the Kneeland-Walker House and the Former Home for Dependent Children! \n\n\n\nNot a member? SUMMARY:Postal Perfect Architecture: Sears and Roebuck Houses in Wisconsin
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we welcome Jim Draeger for his presentation on Sears and Roebuck Houses in Wisconsin! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJim Draeger discusses the emergence of the houses-by-mail phenomenon in an illustrated lecture.  Jim explores 19th century companies\, who offered blueprints by mail. As other companies entered the mail order business\, Sears and Roebuck began selling millwork and house plans in 1895 and by 1908 offered complete homes through mail order catalogs.  Sears eventually became the largest supplier of mail-order houses in America.  Over more than 3 decades of operation\, Sears and Roebuck claimed to have sold over 100\,000 homes.  Learn about this fascinating chapter of our building history seen through Wisconsin examples. \n\n\n\nJim Draeger has a deep and abiding interest in everyday buildings and the stories behind them. As an architectural historian\, who retired as State Historic Preservation Officer after 31 years at the Wisconsin Historical Society\, Draeger celebrates the importance of ordinary buildings to our daily lives through his research\, writing\, lectures and documentaries. With co-author\, Mark Speltz\, he has published with Wisconsin Historical Society Press\, two award-winning books profoundly imbedded with the history of Wisconsin: “Fill ‘er Up: The Glory Days of Wisconsin Gas Stations.” (2008) and “Bottoms Up: A Toast to Wisconsin’s Historic Bars & Breweries.” (2012) He is also a frequent presenter on Wisconsin Public Television\, which has produced a companion DVDs to both books and is seen in other documentaries on resorts\, supper clubs and other Wisconsin topics. \n\n\n\nRegister to secure your spot.
