SUMMARY:Exploring the Clapp Database
DESCRIPTION:Early Settlers\, Eastern Perspectives and Western Realities\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat did everyday life really look like in early Wauwatosa? What concerned the newest residents\, what brought them joy\, and how did they navigate the gap between their expectations of the west compared to the realities of the new frontier?  \n\n\n\nYou’re invited to dive into the Clapp Letters – personal correspondence that reveals how early settlers really lived\, what they valued\, and how they navigated life in Wauwatosa. Learn how primary sources like these letters help us move beyond textbook narratives to uncover the authentic voices of those who shaped our community\, and those who continue to shape it. From earlier settlers and beyond\, the Clapp Letters help us to answer questions about our community in a way that is both appropriate and personal.  \n\n\n\nPresented by WHS Researcher Rowen Mullins. Rowen is an aspiring history professor with a deep knowledge of public history and the value of the archives to the community. While they hope to eventually study Medieval history with an emphasis on Women’s work\, they are just as eager to learn about the local history and deepen the accessibility our community has to primary sources. For the past 7 months\, Rowen has been working on a large indexing project for the Wauwatosa Historical Society – The Clapp Letters – which will help to accomplish these goals. Having read hundreds of letters\, and with hundreds still being indexed\, Rowen is eager to share important things they’ve found between the lines and explore what that means about our community.  \n\n\n\nDoors open 30 minutes prior to the start of the presentation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReserve your seat!\n\n\n\nThe Speakers Series is free to attend\, but please let us know you’re coming so we can save you a seat. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThank you to our sponsor\n\n\n\nThe 2026 Speaker Series is made possible through the generous support of our sponsor Champine Realty Group of Keller Williams.

SUMMARY:Postal Perfect Architecture: Sears and Roebuck Houses in Wisconsin
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we welcome Jim Draeger for his presentation on Sears and Roebuck Houses in Wisconsin! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJim Draeger discusses the emergence of the houses-by-mail phenomenon in an illustrated lecture.  Jim explores 19th century companies\, who offered blueprints by mail. As other companies entered the mail order business\, Sears and Roebuck began selling millwork and house plans in 1895 and by 1908 offered complete homes through mail order catalogs.  Sears eventually became the largest supplier of mail-order houses in America.  Over more than 3 decades of operation\, Sears and Roebuck claimed to have sold over 100\,000 homes.  Learn about this fascinating chapter of our building history seen through Wisconsin examples. \n\n\n\nJim Draeger has a deep and abiding interest in everyday buildings and the stories behind them. As an architectural historian\, who retired as State Historic Preservation Officer after 31 years at the Wisconsin Historical Society\, Draeger celebrates the importance of ordinary buildings to our daily lives through his research\, writing\, lectures and documentaries. With co-author\, Mark Speltz\, he has published with Wisconsin Historical Society Press\, two award-winning books profoundly imbedded with the history of Wisconsin: “Fill ‘er Up: The Glory Days of Wisconsin Gas Stations.” (2008) and “Bottoms Up: A Toast to Wisconsin’s Historic Bars & Breweries.” (2012) He is also a frequent presenter on Wisconsin Public Television\, which has produced a companion DVDs to both books and is seen in other documentaries on resorts\, supper clubs and other Wisconsin topics. \n\n\n\nRegister to secure your spot. SUMMARY:Horses and Hops:  The History of the Pabst Wauwatosa Stock Farm with John Eastberg
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we welcome John Eastberg for his presentation on the history of the Pabst Wauwatosa Stock Farm. \n\n\n\n\n\nBeginning in the early 1870s\, Milwaukee beer baron Captain Frederick Pabst began acquiring property in nearby Wauwatosa.  The Pabst Wauwatosa Stock Farm was not only a retreat for his prized Percheron horses that drew Pabst beer wagons throughout the city\, but also as a retreat for the Pabst family.  Eastberg delves into the history of the Pabst family\, their love of horses and how that transmitted into the early development of Wauwatosa and later the Washington Highlands. \n\n\n\nJohn C. Eastberg\, long-associated with the Pabst Mansion\, is currently a freelance historian\, continuing his research and writing on Milwaukee social and architectural topics.  He has written two books\, Pabst Mansion: An Illustrated History and Pabst Farms: History of a Model Farm as well as co-authoring Layton’s Legacy: A Historic American Art Collection\, 1888-2013 and is currently completing a three-generational biography of one branch of the Pabst family. \n\n\n\nRegister to secure your spot. SUMMARY:Gilbert Girls: Three Generations of Remarkable Wauwatosa Women
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we celebrate Women’s History Month!\n\n\n\n\n\n“Gilbert Girls: Three Generations of Remarkable Wauwatosa Women” is the story of Nancy Green Gilbert\, Mary Fisher Gilbert\, and Kate Evelyn Gilbert – all west side Wauwatosa residents. Nancy\, the mother of ten children\, was a true pioneer – one of the first to settle in Wauwatosa Township. Nancy’s daughter-in-law\, Mary\, came of age during Wauwatosa’s heyday – witnessing the changes as our small settlement became a village\, a city\, and finally\, a bedroom suburb of Milwaukee. Last but certainly not least\, Mary’s youngest daughter\, spunky Kate Evelyn\, resisted the wrecking ball when her childhood home was removed to make way for the new Mayfair Mall. Meet these three marvelous Gilbert Girls at our Speaker Series on March 10th at the Wauwatosa Public Library’s Firefly Room. \n\n\n\nPresenter Carol Rosen is a member of WHS’s research and writing team. She received a Ph.D. in Historical Geography from UW-Milwaukee and is now retired as Professor Emeritus from the Geography Department at UW-Whitewater. Carol and her husband\, Dave\, live in Wauwatosa. They have two grown children\, five grandchildren\, and an 11-year-old rescue “pup” who keeps them very busy. \n\n\n\nRegister to secure your spot. Cost: FREE \n\n\n\n\n\nSome of the many Gilbert Girls of Wauwatosa are shown picnicking on the shore of Lake Michigan.  All of the above are granddaughters or great-granddaughters of Wauwatosa pioneers Richard and Nancy Green Gilbert. SUMMARY:Schoonmaker Reef
DESCRIPTION:2024 Speaker Series\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for the first Speaker Series event of 2024 where Donald Mikulic\, curator at the Weis Earth Science Museum in Menasha\, will delve into the fascinating history of the Schoonmaker Reef. \n\n\n\nDid you know Wauwatosa boasts an ancient reef dating back 425 million years to the Silurian Period\, when most of North America was submerged in a tropical sea? In 1862\, geologist James Hall marked a distinctive rock mound at Schoonmaker Quarry as a textbook example of an ancient reef and potentially the first fossil reef in North America—and possibly the world. \n\n\n\n\n\nDuring the 1830s\, individuals discovered substantial dolomite mounds in the walls of the Menomonee River valley. This led to the establishment of quarries for limestone extraction\, quickly evolving into a significant industry. In the same era\, Increase Allen Lapham\, a self-taught geologist and minerologist\, initiated a study of local geology and the Wauwatosa quarries. Comparing fossils from these quarries with those in the Niagara Escarpment of western New York\, Lapham commenced correspondence with James Hall\, who subsequently published their research. \n\n\n\n\n\nBuilding stone quarry in Niagara dolomite at Wauwatosa\n\n\n\n\n\nWhile Lapham was the initial fossil collector at the quarry\, it was Dr. Fisk Holbrook Day who significantly elevated its prominence. A physician for Milwaukee County institutions and an amateur geologist\, Dr. Day constructed the impressive Dr. Fisk Holbrook Day House\, also known as Sunnyhill Home\, at 8000 West Milwaukee Avenue in 1874—in part to house his growing collection of paleontological artifacts. For over two decades\, Dr. Day was nearly the sole collector of fossils at the Schoonmaker Quarry\, granting him the privilege to choose specimens freely. The collection grew so vast he dedicated a room at Sunnyhill to accommodate it. In 1880\, he sold the majority of his fossil collection\, and it found a new home at Harvard University’s Museum of Comparative Zoology. Dr. Day shipped 8\,265 pounds of specimens to Harvard as part of this transfer. \n\n\n\nTo learn more about the history of the reef\, register for the speaker series event. Though Speaker Series event registration is free to members\, registration is still required. \n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Zeddie Hyler’s Quest for Equality in Wauwatosa
DESCRIPTION:Zeddie Hyler at his Wauwatosa Home. Photograph courtesy of the Milwaukee Journal. \nZeddie Quitman Hyler earned his bachelor’s degree\, left the unrelenting sun of the south\, and headed north as part of the Great Migration. Six million African Americans were part of this historic movement. \nDetermined not to view the color of his skin as a death sentence\, Hyler encouraged his siblings to join him\, worked as a postal clerk\, amassed properties\, and became a business leader. In 1955\, he was ready to build a family home in Wauwatosa. He faced repeated appearances before city fathers and denials of his request for a building permit. The tide turned when 39 Wauwatosa white women protested\, invoking the Bill of Rights. The Zeddie Quitman Hyler home is still standing and has received a historic designation. \nHyler’s niece\, Lora Hyler\, a filmmaker\, author\, essayist\, and podcaster will speak about her uncle’s legacy\, and status as the first African American to integrate Wauwatosa. \nADD REGISTRATION BUTTON HERE
